Solar panels for UK dental and medical practices
Dental and GP practices open 08:00–18:30 Monday to Friday — a near-perfect solar match. Compressors, autoclaves, X-ray and HVAC all draw during daylight and are cut 25–50% by a right-sized rooftop array.
Typical system sizes
Single-site dental practice (4 chairs)
10–20 kWp. £9k–£19k. £1.8k–£3.6k/yr saved. Typical 5–7 year payback.
Group dental practice (10+ chairs, on-site lab)
30–60 kWp. Covers CBCT, in-house milling and compressor room during trading hours.
GP surgery / medical centre (10–20k patients)
40–80 kWp. Helps with the Greener NHS PCN commitments already made by most CCG-successor structures.
Private clinic group / cosmetic chain
PPA rollout at £0 capex across 20+ sites, badged as part of the group's ESG report.
Air-source heat pump + solar is the emerging default
Newly refurbished dental and medical practices increasingly pair solar with an air-source heat pump, dropping gas altogether. A 40 kWp array plus a 12 kW heat pump serves a typical 4-chair dental practice on 90% renewable energy year-round — a strong ESG story and simpler compliance under the Future Buildings Standard.
FAQ
What about interference with X-ray or imaging equipment?
None. Solar inverters run at 50 Hz mains frequency behind a G99-compliant filter. Imaging OEMs (Sirona, Planmeca, Dentsply, GE) install alongside solar routinely; there is no measurable interference in normal operation.
Will installation force us to close?
Physical roof works are external and inaudible in surgery. The final DB tie-in requires a 30–60-minute planned isolation which we schedule Sunday morning or a weekday evening to avoid clinical time.
Are dental / medical premises usually structurally suitable?
Modern purpose-built medical centres almost always are; converted shops or houses need a five-minute structural check. Flat-roof modular medical centres take ballasted rail systems without penetrations.
How does solar interact with our NHS practice contract or GDS agreement?
It doesn't affect the clinical contract at all — solar is a private property improvement. NHS-branded practices increasingly report their CO2e progress under Greener NHS; on-site solar is the biggest single lever available at practice scale.
Are there any tax advantages for a limited-company practice?
Yes — 50% First-Year Allowance and Full Expensing apply to commercial solar equipment. Sole-trader and partnership practices use the Annual Investment Allowance. Speak to your accountant — for a £30k array the tax uplift is worth £5–£8k in year one.
