Funding pathways
Salix funds the majority of NHS solar today. PSDS Phase 4+ bundles solar with heat-pump projects. PPAs are increasingly used to accelerate rollouts when capital budgets are tight.

Can NHS trusts install solar?
Yes — Greener NHS mandates all trusts publish and deliver a Green Plan. Solar is one of the highest-scoring single interventions and is now standard in new-build hospitals under HTM 07-07 sustainability guidance.
How do trusts fund solar?
Three main routes: (1) Salix interest-free loans repaid from energy savings, (2) Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) grants bundled with heat-pump projects, (3) PPAs where a third party owns and operates the array with no NHS capex.
Does solar affect hospital resilience?
By itself no — hospital resilience relies on standby diesel generators mandated under HTM 06-01. Adding a battery to a solar array gives short-duration back-up (typically 30–120 minutes on critical loads), useful for bridging generator start and load-shed events.
How does solar fit alongside heat decarbonisation?
Hospitals are gas-heavy (steam, DHW, space heating). The full decarbonisation route is heat pumps + solar PV + fabric upgrades in that order. Solar alone rarely exceeds 8–12% of a hospital's total energy — but paired with electrified heat, PV becomes far more valuable.
Are the numbers different for private healthcare?
Private hospitals face the same load profiles but can use Full Expensing on capex and are often more sensitive to green credentials for patient acquisition. Payback tends to be 4–6 years, faster than the NHS Salix-funded equivalent.
