Solar panels for UK car dealerships and showrooms
Dealerships are triple-load sites — showroom, workshop and increasingly EV pre-delivery inspection. Rooftop plus forecourt-canopy solar can meet 40–60% of daytime demand across all three.
Typical system sizes
Single-franchise showroom (1,500 m²)
80–150 kWp. £72k–£140k. £14k–£25k/yr saved. Adds a green tick to the manufacturer's dealer standards audit.
Multi-franchise dealership (showroom + workshop)
200–400 kWp roof + 50 kWp car-display canopy. Covers ramps, MOT bay compressors and paint-shop extract during the trading day.
Used-car supermarket (2 ha)
500 kWp–1.2 MWp across roof and canopies. Enables 40–80 destination EV chargers without a costly DNO upgrade via battery-buffered load.
Dealer group (10–60 sites)
PPA rollout — most manufacturers now require Scope 2 progress from franchisees; solar is the cheapest single lever.
Forecourt canopies double as brand real estate
A 40-car forecourt canopy generates roughly 120–180 kWp, shelters demo stock and hosts destination EV chargers. In practice most dealers recoup the canopy premium within 3–4 years through combined generation, charging revenue and premium car-display uplift.

FAQ
Do manufacturers require solar in dealer standards?
Not universally yet, but VW Group, BMW, Volvo Cars, Stellantis and Toyota all publish sustainability guidance for franchised networks and audit CO2e progress. A rooftop array is typically the single biggest measurable step.
Can we combine solar with EV pre-delivery inspection charging?
Yes — this is one of the strongest solar cases in retail. PDI charging is scheduled overnight or during trading hours; a battery-buffered array shifts midday generation into overnight PDI slots, avoiding an expensive DNO upgrade for higher grid capacity.
Won't glare from panels affect nearby roads or houses?
Modern modules use anti-reflective coating with reflectance below untreated glass. Glare studies (using a tool like ForgeSolar) are commonly required near roads and airports and are almost always green-lit for tilted roof panels.
What about visual impact on the customer-facing showroom?
Panels sit on service and workshop roofs behind the showroom in almost every design; forecourt canopies are becoming a brand asset (BMW, Polestar, Volvo all use them prominently in new sites). Ask us for reference photos.
How is a franchised site treated for capital allowances?
Solar equipment qualifies for 50% First-Year Allowance and now Full Expensing for limited-company dealer groups. Sole-trader or partnership dealers use the AIA. Talk to your accountant — for large dealer groups the tax uplift is worth 12–18% of project value.
