How big are commercial solar panels, how efficient are they and how much do they produce?

The short answer: most commercial panels are 1.7 to 2.4 metres long, convert about 20 to 23 per cent of sunlight into electricity, and in the UK produce roughly 800 to 1,100 kWh a year for every kWp installed. Your exact output depends on where you are and how the roof faces.

Commercial solar panel sizes

FormatTypical sizeTypical wattageBest for
Standard formatAbout 1.7 m x 1.1 mRoughly 400-450 WSmaller or awkward roofs, easier handling
Large formatAbout 2.3-2.4 m x 1.1 mRoughly 550-650 WLarge warehouse and industrial roofs, ground mounts

What panel efficiency means

Efficiency is the share of sunlight a panel turns into electricity under standard test conditions. A more efficient panel produces more from the same area, which helps on small or crowded roofs. On large roofs, cost per kWp and long-term warranties often matter more. See our warranties guide and how long panels last.

How much a commercial system produces

Yearly output = system size (kWp) x local yield (kWh per kWp). UK yields typically sit around 800 to 1,100 kWh per kWp, higher in the south and lower in the north, based on PVGIS data. For example, a 100 kWp system at 950 kWh per kWp would produce about 95,000 kWh a year. This is an illustration only; orientation, tilt and shading change the result.

Frequently asked questions

How big are commercial solar panels?

Most commercial panels are roughly 1.7 to 2.4 metres long and about 1.1 metres wide. The larger formats carry higher wattages. Always check the exact dimensions on the manufacturer's datasheet, as they vary by model.

How efficient are commercial solar panels?

Mainstream monocrystalline panels sold today typically convert around 20 to 23 per cent of the sunlight that hits them into electricity. Higher efficiency means more output from the same roof area, not necessarily a better return.

How much energy does a commercial solar panel produce?

In the UK, each kilowatt-peak (kWp) of panels typically produces somewhere around 800 to 1,100 kWh a year, depending mainly on location, orientation, tilt and shading. A panel's yearly output is its kWp rating multiplied by that local figure.

How many panels do I need?

Divide the system size you need by the panel wattage. For example, a 100 kWp system using 500 W panels needs about 200 panels. The right system size depends on your daytime electricity use and roof space.

How much roof space does commercial solar need?

As a rough guide, allow around 5 to 7 square metres of usable roof per kWp, including spacing and access routes. Your installer will confirm the layout after a survey.

Do higher-efficiency panels pay back faster?

Not always. They matter most when roof space is limited. Where space is plentiful, a lower-cost panel can give a similar or better return. Compare cost per kWp and expected output together.
