UK Commercial Solar Benchmarks 2026

Proprietary Solar Britain reference dataset covering installed cost bands (£/kWp), annual generation yield by UK region, self-consumption ranges by system size, and typical payback by sector. Compiled from Solar Britain feasibility studies and cross-referenced with DESNZ, Ofgem, MCS and Solar Energy UK published data.

By Mike Davies, Managing Director, Solar Britain · Published 1 April 2026 · Updated 27 July 2026.

Headline benchmarks (2026)

  • Installed cost for rooftop commercial PV: £600–£1,050 per kWp, sliding down as system size increases.
  • Typical UK yield: 830–1,050 kWh per kWp per year, best in the South West, lowest in Central Scotland.
  • Self-consumption ratios: 40–85% depending on system size vs. site daytime load profile.
  • Simple payback across the eight most common commercial sectors: 4–9 years.
  • Cold storage, manufacturing and NHS sites see the fastest payback thanks to steady daytime demand.

Installed cost, yield & payback by system size

Cost bands are turnkey (design, panels, inverters, DC/AC install, DNO fees, commissioning), excluding VAT and battery storage. Yields are net (after inverter and system losses).

Typical payback by commercial sector

SectorPaybackWhy
Warehouse & logistics5–7 yrsLarge roof, moderate daytime load — high export share.
Cold storage4–6 yrs24/7 refrigeration load — very high self-consumption.
Factories & manufacturing4–6 yrsHeavy daytime process load — excellent match.
Supermarkets & retail5–7 yrsSteady all-day load; strong self-consumption.
Farms & agriculture5–8 yrsSeasonal load; benefits from battery + SEG export.
Offices6–9 yrsDaytime-only load, but often smaller roof area.
Hotels & leisure6–8 yrsEvening-heavy load; battery improves payback.
Care homes & NHS5–7 yrsSteady 24/7 load; grant funding available.
