UK Commercial Solar Benchmarks 2026
Proprietary Solar Britain reference dataset covering installed cost bands (£/kWp), annual generation yield by UK region, self-consumption ranges by system size, and typical payback by sector. Compiled from Solar Britain feasibility studies and cross-referenced with DESNZ, Ofgem, MCS and Solar Energy UK published data.

Headline benchmarks (2026)
- Installed cost for rooftop commercial PV: £600–£1,050 per kWp, sliding down as system size increases.
- Typical UK yield: 830–1,050 kWh per kWp per year, best in the South West, lowest in Central Scotland.
- Self-consumption ratios: 40–85% depending on system size vs. site daytime load profile.
- Simple payback across the eight most common commercial sectors: 4–9 years.
- Cold storage, manufacturing and NHS sites see the fastest payback thanks to steady daytime demand.
Installed cost, yield & payback by system size
Cost bands are turnkey (design, panels, inverters, DC/AC install, DNO fees, commissioning), excluding VAT and battery storage. Yields are net (after inverter and system losses).
| System size | Cost (low) | Cost (high) | Annual yield | Self-consumption | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30–50 kWp | £850/kWp | £1,050/kWp | 900–950 kWh/kWp/yr | 55–75% | 5–7 yrs |
| 50–100 kWp | £800/kWp | £950/kWp | 920–970 kWh/kWp/yr | 60–80% | 5–7 yrs |
| 100–250 kWp | £750/kWp | £900/kWp | 930–980 kWh/kWp/yr | 60–85% | 4–6 yrs |
| 250–500 kWp | £700/kWp | £850/kWp | 940–990 kWh/kWp/yr | 55–85% | 4–6 yrs |
| 500 kWp – 1 MWp | £650/kWp | £800/kWp | 950–1,000 kWh/kWp/yr | 50–80% | 4–6 yrs |
| 1 MWp+ | £600/kWp | £750/kWp | 950–1,020 kWh/kWp/yr | 40–75% | 5–7 yrs |
Annual yield by UK region
| Region | Typical yield | Irradiance band |
|---|---|---|
| South West England | 1,000–1,050 kWh/kWp/yr | High |
| South East England | 980–1,030 kWh/kWp/yr | High |
| East of England | 970–1,020 kWh/kWp/yr | High |
| Midlands | 930–980 kWh/kWp/yr | Mid |
| Wales | 920–970 kWh/kWp/yr | Mid |
| North West & Yorkshire | 880–930 kWh/kWp/yr | Mid |
| North East England | 870–920 kWh/kWp/yr | Mid-Low |
| Scotland (Central Belt) | 830–880 kWh/kWp/yr | Low |
| Northern Ireland | 850–900 kWh/kWp/yr | Low |
Typical payback by commercial sector
| Sector | Payback | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warehouse & logistics | 5–7 yrs | Large roof, moderate daytime load — high export share. |
| Cold storage | 4–6 yrs | 24/7 refrigeration load — very high self-consumption. |
| Factories & manufacturing | 4–6 yrs | Heavy daytime process load — excellent match. |
| Supermarkets & retail | 5–7 yrs | Steady all-day load; strong self-consumption. |
| Farms & agriculture | 5–8 yrs | Seasonal load; benefits from battery + SEG export. |
| Offices | 6–9 yrs | Daytime-only load, but often smaller roof area. |
| Hotels & leisure | 6–8 yrs | Evening-heavy load; battery improves payback. |
| Care homes & NHS | 5–7 yrs | Steady 24/7 load; grant funding available. |
