Modern marinas draw serious grid power — shore-power, hoists, wash bays and boat-storage lighting. Rooftop solar on workshops, dry-stack buildings and clubhouse roofs offsets 25–55% and pays for berth-holder EV chargers.

Typical system sizes

Small yacht club / RYA base

20–50 kWp on clubhouse and workshop roofs. Enough for club HVAC, race-room lights, cadet centre and the drying room.

Mid-size marina (200–400 berths)

150–400 kWp across boatyard, chandlery, dry-stack and washroom blocks. Powers hoists, pressure washes and shore-power for 30–50% of berth-load days.

Large marina + harbour authority

500 kWp–1.5 MWp. Adds shore-power for larger yachts (16-30A cold-ironing), plus EV chargers in the berth-holder car park.

Berth-holder EV chargers change the case

Modern berth-holders drive EVs to the boat — often twice weekly across a season. A 6-charger installation powered from marina solar generates 25–40 charging sessions per week at £8–£14 revenue each, materially shortening payback while adding a genuine berth-holder benefit.

FAQ

Isn't the coastal environment tough on panels?

Yes — marine air is corrosive to inferior components. Specify Tier-1 panels with a saline-mist certification (IEC 61701) and 316 stainless mounting hardware. With those choices, coastal installs perform indistinguishably from inland ones for 25+ years.

Will solar affect our Blue Flag / RYA Green Blue accreditation?

Only positively — on-site renewables are directly credited in both. Most Blue Flag marinas now publish generation and energy data alongside water quality.

Can solar power shore-power pedestals?

Yes, especially with a small battery buffer. Shore-power peaks in evenings and weekends (crews aboard); a battery time-shifts midday solar into evening use. Cold-ironing (larger 63A supplies for superyachts) needs a bigger array plus grid, but is achievable.

What about planning in AONBs or heritage coasts?

Rooftop solar on functional buildings is almost always permitted development regardless of AONB status. Ground-mount is more restricted — you'd usually place it behind existing buildings or use land already in operational use (car park, boat yard).

Do we need any special harbour-authority approvals?

Typically no — the harbour-authority licence covers marine works, not landside plant. Landside solar goes through normal planning and DNO G99 processes.
