Café loads are the surprise winner
Most centres discover their café is a bigger daytime electricity load than the shop — restaurant HVAC, dishwashers, coffee machines and refrigeration run 10 hours a day. A 200 kWp array meets 60–80% of a typical mid-size centre café + shop load in April to September.
FAQ
What about glasshouse and polytunnel roofs?
You don't install on the glazed roof itself, but many centres now use adjacent packing sheds, cold-storage buildings and staff-parking canopies for solar — plus ground-mount on unused land or between production areas.
Can we power growlights and propagation heat?
Yes. Growlights are typically operated in shoulder-season daylight hours (extending photoperiod), overlapping well with solar generation. Heating that runs on gas can be switched to heat pumps, sized to the solar array.
Will customers accept solar carports over the car park?
In practice enthusiastically — for a garden-centre audience, visible sustainability is a plus. Adding EV chargers with cafe validation turns the car park into a dwell-time driver.
Are there grants for horticulture and food-growing sites?
Working nurseries and commercial growers can access DEFRA's Farming Investment Fund and Water Management Grant components — plus historically the Rural Development Programme. We can help identify current eligibility.
Does solar help with our peat-free / eco-label positioning?
Directly — many centres now display real-time generation on a customer-facing screen next to the till or garden-café. It becomes a proof point for the sustainability commitments already made on peat-free compost, native planting and biodiversity.
