Solar panels for UK data centres
On-site solar rarely powers more than a slice of a UK data centre's 24/7 load — but paired with a corporate PPA it's the cheapest, most bankable route to Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact targets.
Solar options by data-centre scale
Edge / MTDC (1–3 MW IT load)
200–500 kWp on roof, plant yard and carport. Offsets 5–10% of annual kWh — useful for PUE-adjusted RE100 reporting.
Mid-size colo (5–15 MW IT load)
1–3 MWp on-site plus corporate PPA. On-site solar rarely exceeds 15% of load — the balance comes from off-site sleeved PPAs.
Hyperscale (30 MW+ IT load)
Off-site utility-scale PPA at 20–80 MWp. On-site solar is symbolic; the real decarbonisation lever is a virtual or physical PPA covering 80–100% of demand.
On-site vs off-site PPA
Roof and carport PV covers ancillary load (offices, security, EV chargers). For the IT and cooling load, most operators contract 15–20 year sleeved or virtual PPAs at 5–7p/kWh — well below wholesale.

FAQ
Can solar meaningfully power a UK data centre?
On-site solar rarely exceeds 10–15% of annual kWh because IT load is flat 24/7 and roofs are small relative to demand. The route to 100% renewable is a corporate PPA — on-site solar plays a supporting role on PUE and marketing.
How do data centres typically buy solar?
Three routes: (1) rooftop / carport self-consumption for the ancillary load, (2) virtual PPAs (financial contracts referenced to a UK solar farm), and (3) sleeved PPAs where a supplier delivers matched solar volume against the DC's demand profile.
Does solar improve PUE?
Not directly — PUE is a ratio of total facility power to IT power, so cutting the imported kWh doesn't change the ratio. But solar improves the increasingly important CUE (carbon usage effectiveness) and REF (renewable energy factor) metrics used under the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact.
What about 24/7 carbon-free matching?
24/7 CFE requires solar + wind + storage matched hour-by-hour to consumption. A single UK solar PPA typically achieves 20–35% temporal match on its own; pairing with wind lifts that to 70–85%. Storage or nuclear PPAs close the remaining gap.
