How UK solar recycling works
Producer take-back under WEEE
The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations classify PV modules as WEEE. Manufacturers must fund end-of-life collection and recycling — no cost to the site owner if handled through a registered producer scheme.
PV Cycle & Recolight
The two main UK PV take-back schemes. Both provide free collection nationally for accumulations of 40+ panels. Independent recyclers (Reclaim PV, ROSI Solar) also operate specialist processes.
Mechanical vs thermal recycling
Mechanical (crushing + separation) recovers 85–95% of mass — mostly glass and aluminium. Thermal / delamination processes recover silicon and silver too, pushing recovery above 95%.
Decommissioning contracting
For 500 kWp+ arrays, always include end-of-life decommissioning terms in the EPC/PPA. Reputable installers offer a fixed £/panel decommissioning quote alongside install pricing.
What to insist on in your contract
- Panels from a WEEE-registered producer with UK take-back scheme membership.
- Named decommissioning contractor and fixed £/panel end-of-life quote.
- Reuse-first clause: panels retired early go to secondary market, not landfill.
