Answer

How many solar panels fit on a warehouse roof?

A modern UK warehouse fits roughly 100 kWp — around 200 solar panels at 500 W each — per 1,000 m² (10,760 sq ft) of usable south-facing metal roof. A 40,000 sq ft distribution shed typically fits a 300 kWp array (~600 panels); a 150,000 sq ft big-box DC fits about 1.1 MWp (~2,200 panels) after allowing for walkways, rooflights and setbacks.

Key facts at a glance

10,000 sq ft warehouse~75 kWp (150 panels)
20,000 sq ft warehouse~150 kWp (300 panels)
40,000 sq ft warehouse~300 kWp (600 panels)
80,000 sq ft warehouse~600 kWp (1,200 panels)
150,000 sq ft warehouse~1.1 MWp (2,200 panels)
300,000 sq ft warehouse~2.2 MWp (4,400 panels)
Panel area~2.6 m² per panel including access

What limits the count

Rooflight zones, HVAC plant, walkways and edge/ridge setbacks typically remove 15–25% of the roof plane. Orientation matters — east-west arrays fit more panels but at ~10% lower per-panel yield. Older metal roofs with fragile fixings can constrain layout further.

Structural check comes first

A modern clamp-fixed rooftop array adds 15–20 kg/m² of dead load. Post-2000 UK sheds almost always accept this; pre-1990 fibre-cement or lightweight portal frames may need reinforcement or ballast reduction. A structural survey is standard.

FAQ

How many solar panels fit on 40,000 sq ft of roof?

About 600 panels (300 kWp), generating around 285,000 kWh/year in the UK.

How many panels for a 1 MWp warehouse system?

Roughly 2,000 panels at 500 W each, or 1,820 panels at 550 W. Requires about 10,000 m² of usable roof.
