Does solar improve an EPC rating and MEES compliance?
Usually yes. Solar reduces the building's modelled energy use, which is what a commercial EPC measures, so it often moves a property up a band. That matters most where a building sits below the MEES minimum of E and cannot be let or renewed. The improvement must be captured in a reassessment after commissioning to count.

Key facts at a glance
| Current MEES minimum | EPC E for letting and renewals |
|---|---|
| What EPC measures | Modelled energy use, not actual bills |
| Typical effect | Often one band, sometimes more |
| Biggest gains | Older, less efficient buildings |
| Required step | Reassessment after commissioning |
| Evidence needed | System ownership and metering documented |
Why the gain varies so much
The rating responds to generation relative to the assessed building's modelled demand. A large array on a small, poorly insulated unit can move several points; a modest array on an already efficient building moves fewer. Where the driver is lettability, model the expected rating before committing, rather than assuming a band jump.
Do it alongside the recommendations report
The existing EPC recommendations report usually lists cheaper measures — lighting, controls, insulation — that shift the rating too. Reviewing those with the solar design gives the most compliance per pound spent and avoids paying for generation to compensate for an easy fabric fix.

FAQ
Will a new EPC be issued automatically?
No. You need to commission a reassessment once the system is live, with the generation details provided to the assessor.
Does a PPA-owned system still help the rating?
Generation serving the assessed building can be credited, but ownership and metering must be documented. Confirm the position with your assessor before relying on it.
