Modern commercial solar panels are almost universally monocrystalline. The choice is now between standard front-side-only monocrystalline (mono PERC / TOPCon) and bifacial modules that also capture reflected light from the underside — with different capex, mounting requirements, and yield.

Our verdict

For most UK rooftop commercial installations, stay with monocrystalline (TOPCon in 2026). Bifacial is worth the uplift on ground-mount, solar carports, and elevated flat-roof arrays with light-coloured ballast or reflective membranes — where the 5–15% rear gain typically outweighs the extra capex.

Are bifacial panels more durable?

Glass-glass bifacial panels typically carry longer product warranties (15–30 years) than glass-backsheet monofacial (12–15 years), and are more resistant to microcracks and PID (potential-induced degradation).

Do bifacial panels work on trapezoidal metal roofs?

The rear gain is minimal on dark metal roofs — under 3%. Save bifacial for ground-mount, carport or reflective-membrane roofs where the uplift justifies the cost.
