Answer

Is commercial solar worth it in 2026?

Yes — commercial solar is worth it for most UK businesses in 2026. Typical rooftop systems pay back in 3.5–6 years and deliver a 15–25% internal rate of return (IRR) over a 25-year asset life. High grid prices, 100% Full Expensing on qualifying capex, and the tightening MEES/EPC B requirement by 2030 all strengthen the case versus 2022.

Key facts at a glance

Typical payback (2026)3.5–6 years
25-year IRR15–25% for well-sized systems
Panel warranted output at year 2584–87% of day-one
Corporation tax relief100% Full Expensing
Business rates on solarExempt (April 2023 onwards)
MEES minimum EPC by 2030B (currently E)

What has changed since 2022

Non-domestic electricity averaged 26p/kWh in 2024–25 and remains above 22p/kWh forward. Panel prices fell 40% between 2022 and 2025. Full Expensing replaced the super-deduction in April 2023 and is now permanent. Business rates on rooftop solar were removed. The net result: payback is roughly half what it was in 2020.

When it isn't worth it

Sites with under ~15% daytime self-consumption (weekend-only occupation, seasonal-only demand), imminent roof replacement without capex to combine, or short remaining lease with an uncooperative landlord. In each case a PPA can still make it worth it with no upfront cost.

FAQ

What's the ROI on commercial solar in 2026?

Well-sized UK commercial systems deliver a 15–25% IRR over 25 years, equivalent to a 3.5–6 year payback. Return improves with higher daytime consumption and lower export percentage.

Will solar still be worth it if grid prices fall?

Yes. Even at a sustained 15p/kWh grid price, most commercial systems still pay back within 8 years — well inside the 25-year warranted life.
